Collaborative Practice
When you and your spouse separate, you are left to deal with all the issues arising from your separation. It can be a scary, messy, and uncertain time in your life, your spouse’s life, and most importantly, your children’s lives.
The one thing you have control over is how you are going to deal with these issues. So why not choose a process that is designed to help you move past the conflict with dignity and respect.
At Family Law Compass, we are trained in Collaborative Practice. Collaborative Practice is a multi-disciplinary approach to conflict resolution that addresses the emotional, financial, and legal issues that are integral to families in transition. You and your spouse each hire a collaboratively trained lawyer, a financial professional, and a family professional who all work together as a team to come up with a customized solution that works for your family.
Collaborative Practice is also widely used to assist couples in drafting a Cohabitation Agreement or Marriage Contract. The team assists the couple in crafting an agreement through respectful, constructive and interest-based discussions.

Unbundled Legal Services / Limited Scope Services
At Family Law Compass, we offer unbundled legal services (also referred to as limited scope services). This means we can help you by performing a discrete task on your matter or dealing with a specific issue in your case. You remain in control of your case. We just help you out along the way. Unbundled legal services allows you to get the best value and outcome based on the resources you have. This arrangement is particularly helpful to those who are self-represented and can benefit from having a lawyer involved in some capacity, but simply cannot afford to have a lawyer on a traditional retainer.
Some examples of what an unbundled legal services retainer can cover are:
- preparing materials for mediation, arbitration or court;
- attending a mediation, arbitration or court hearing with you;
- giving an opinion about a draft agreement;
- providing independent legal advice in relation to cohabitation agreements, marriage contracts, parenting plans and separation agreements; and
- researching a specific legal issue.
